Abstract
High-strength Ti–Fe–Cu, Ti–Fe–Cu–Nd, Ti–Fe–Cu–Sn and Ti–Fe–Cu–Nd–Sn alloys were produced in the shape of arc-melted ingots with the dimensions of about 30 mm in diameter and 10 mm in height. The structure of these alloys consists of an ordered cP2 Ti(Fe,Cu) intermetallic compound and a disordered BCC cI2 β-Ti solid solution. The high strength values result from the high Fe and Cu contents in the supersaturated β-Ti solid solution (solution hardening) and high hardness of the Ti(Fe,Cu) intermetallic compound having a rounded morphology. The high strength and ductility values can be achieved without using the injection mould casting or rapid solidification procedure. Fine structure of the studied alloys, their deformation behavior and the fractography are also studied.
