Abstract
In the last decade substantial progress has been made in the development and the application of solid state detectors. Semiconductor tracking detectors are exploited on a large scale in high energy physics experiments for precise position measurement. In the field of vertex detectors these detectors have proven to be a powerful and reliable tool for physics analysis.
roduction and an overview of the different detector principles and the implementation of these detectors in large experiments will be given. The current state of the art of vertex detectors will be explained taking the experiments at the Large Electron Positron Collider at CERN as an example. Some of the most recent developments in the field of semiconductor detectors will be introduced.
