Abstract
In Belle resistive plate chambers (RPCs), the outermost few layers of the endcap region suffer background (hit rate: 1.4 Hz/cm2) due to neutrons originating from the accelerator. In the future super-KEKB, the hit rate is expected to be ten times higher. To use the present glass RPC in such environment, it is necessary to use high-rate gas in addition to the extra shielding. Gas mixtures with SF6 are promising candidates.
