Abstract
A numerical model for sliding on ice including dry friction and generation of and lubrication by water films is described. The model is verified by comparison with experimentally determined friction coefficients and slider temperatures. Real contact area estimates based on actual topography can explain the experimentally observed temperature dependence, while squeeze out of water at the junctions can explain the observed load dependence of friction.
