Enzymatic reactions in liposomes

A survey of literature reports, concerning the activity of water-soluble enzymes entrapped inside liposomes, demonstrates the general feasibility of liposomes as enzyme-containing submicrometer-sized reactors. Although systematic studies are missing, the investigation of the catalytic properties of enzyme-containing liposomes is generally restricted to systems with small, uncharged substrates for which the lipid bilayer of the liposomes is permeable. So far, only a few attempts have been undertaken to decrease this permeability barrier.
