On thermotropic cubic mesophases

The appearance of a cubic phase in dependence on the temperature raises the question for the molecular organisation in an optical isotropic arrangement. Two different types—cubic phases built by closed spherical micelles, on one hand, and molecular organisations in bicontinuous structures, on the other hand—have been found in dependence on the molecular architecture. The different interactions leading to the different structures are discussed by selected examples.
