Abstract
Geologically, west Somerset offers key sections in the New Red Sandstone succession, good transitions between the New Red Sandstone and the marine transgressions of the Rhaeto-Lias, as well as structures which are late Jurassic to mid-Tertiary in date. Beyond this, however, it is an area rich in industrial archaeology based upon the working of limestone, slate, iron ores and building stone which underpinned the prosperity of Watchet as a port. The localities chosen for this field meeting posed some of the questions raised by the local outcrops for discussion by the members, without necessarily answering them; that remains for future visits.
