  • Abstract
    Motivationisoneofthebasicfactorsthatdeterminessuc- cess andfailureinL2learning;thus,motivationalstrategiesshouldbe regarded asacrucialaspectofthetheoreticalanalysisofL2motivation (Cheng &Drnyei,2007).Thisstudywasanattempttofindoutthe possibleeffectsoftwomotivationalstrategies,namely‘groupcohesive- ness’and‘goal-orientedness’strategiesonpromotinglearners’reading comprehensionintheEFLclasses.NinetyintermediatemaleIranian EFL learnerswerechosenandtheywereassignedtothreegroupsof30 students:groupcohesiveness,goal-orientednessandcontrol.Forthepre- test, theresearcherusedthereadingpartofCambridgeFirstCertificate in English(FCE).Inoneofthegroups,theteacherused‘groupcohe- siveness’motivationstrategyandtheothergroupwasexposedto‘goal- orientedness’.Thetreatmentlastedfor20sessionsandeachsession took1.5hours.Afterthetreatmentphase,thepost-testwasusedtoas-sessparticipants’readingcomprehension.Resultsshowedthatalthoughthelearnersinthetwoexperimentalgroups,groupcohesivenessandgoal-orientedness,indicatedtohavebeensignificantlyimprovedintheirreadingcomprehensionscores,therewasnosignificantdifferencebe-tweenthetwotreatmentconditions.PedagogicalimplicationsforL2in-stitutes,teachereducators,andalsomaterialsdevelopersarediscussed.
