Cikgu Muhammad Zain Haji Ayob the Founder of Panduan Guru

This article analyses the role of Cikgu Haji Muhammad Zain Haji Ayob in establishing Panduan Guru as the first publication of teachers’magazine. Cikgu Muhammad Zain with fellow teachers established Malay Teacher’s Association of Penang in 1920 and at the same time they published “Panduan Guru” to portray Malay teachers’ thinking and leadership. The Publication of Penang Malay Teachers’ became the basic for the existence of other teacher magazines including “Majalah Guru” which has a great impact and nationalistic character. Though short-lived, “Panduan Guru” successfully played the role to arouse national consciousness and enriched information to the teachers and the community. It aims to show to the public the crucial role played by teachers to increase intellectual level, the importance of education and public awareness of the role of the Malay language.
