Squamous Cell Carcinoma Arising from Lichen Planus Actinicus of the Lower Lip

We describe a 45 years old farmer female patient from Al-Sulaymania Governorate presented with rash of lichen planus actinicus that affecting the lower lip and the V-shaped area of the chest of one year duration. Over time, the rash on the lower lip became scaly and intensely itchy. Six months before attending the Department of Dermatology and Venereology -Baghdad Teaching Hospital on November of 2003, she developed a small mass on the top of the lower lip lesion. Over time, this mass was in creasing in size reaching a big ulcerative, crusted, and fungating mass affecting the whole lower lip which progressively increased in size and associated with submental lymphadenopathy. Histopathological examination of the lichen planus actinicus ra sh and mass characteristic of lichenplanus actinicus and squamous cell carcinoma subsequently. This is the first case report that confirmed the progression of lichen planus actinicus lesion into squamous cell carcinoma.
