Abstract
Laser heating of a slab with temperature-independent surface absorption is studied considering also the cooling conditions and the parameters characterizing the laserpulse. Laplace integral transform method is used to solve the heat diffusion equationfor the problem.An expression for temperature field T(x, t) within the slab is obtained. The timerequired to initiate melting tm is also computed. Two elements, silicon andgermanium, are studied.The pulse parameters of predominate effect areqmax (maximum value of q(t) ) and t0 ( the time required to reach qmax), while thepulse duration t d is of less influence.
