  • Abstract
GIS applications to handheld devices are becoming increasing popular, utilizing a diverse range of device. Many of these devices suffer from serious constrains in three main area; memory space, processor speed and screen size. This paper presents a new location based services application on different handheld devices OS(s) that apply to emergency services. To incorporate of different handheld devices OS(s) requires common standards for data exchange and application interface. Conventional methods of proprietary data and software have distinct disadvantages in term of interoperability and integration and not too expensive in cost. XML technology presents a simple and platform independent format to encode spatial data and any programming language is able to parse XML documents. This paper discuss on the usability aspects of XML format and its advantages in wireless database managing applications. A prototype is still under development, using client server architecture. Client is PDAs and mobile devices are sends requests to the server. Server generates XML document from desired area. Generated XML carries the spatial data and attributes to the handheld device. A Java code in client side interprets the XML content and display the results.
