The population changes of the sity of Izmit

Spatial development of cities throughout historic process and their population structure have close relation. The population phenomenon is one ofthe most important criterions of urbanization movements and has come into prominence in the regions where industrialization improved. Izmit, city centre of Kocaeli province, and its population growth pursue a similar process of development. Today, Izmit is one of the densely populated areas like Marmara Region because the city provides job opportunities by means of industrialization activities. Accordingly, Izmit has reached population in excess of 300.000 and population density of 4.600 people per km2. Different periods have occurred in population structure due to many reasons such as political events, industrialization, earthquake, changes of administrative boundaries from past. In this study, the city of Izmit was assessed population change historical process with the reasons.
