The Effectiveness Main Ideas Technique In Speed Reading

This study aimed to assess the process of learning to read quickly for the first year of 2nd semester students of Language and Literature field of Indonesia, Faculty of Teaching and Education, University of Riau. The research methodology is quasi experimental. Samples involved in this study were 43 students. All students were tested twice, once in the middle of the lesson and once at the end of the lesson. The first test was done to measure the ability to read quickly by reading technique browse (scanning) and read surfing (skimming). The second test was done after learning by discovery technique of main ideas. Learning was done for 14 weeks with 100 minutes for each learning session. Training activities was done about 50 minutes during each learning lesson. The result shows the students that are able to quick-speed read are the lowest which is 218.125 words per minute with reading comprehension content of 56% (0.56) in the first test. In the second test, students reading speed increased to 279.20 words per minute with reading comprehension content of 76% (0.76). Effective speed reading (CAMP) on both tests are classified low at 122.15 words per minute on the first test and 212.19 words per minute on the second test.
