Hysteria could be referred to a person s condition that had been affected by jinn [spirits] and might perform unusual action or did something out of the sanity of mind. Various opinions among scholars in understanding the real state of hysteria. Some relate to the disturbance of spirits and some say it is related to psychological problems. Thus, through inductive and deductive analysis, this article aims to clarify the understanding of hysteria based on the texts of the Qur an and hadith as well as the views of the scholars. Results of the study found that the term hysteria means [1] Jinn intereference that can influence a person to a physical action; and [2] psychological unstable or functional disorders associated with anxiety which is related to psychiatric disorder. Nevertheless, these understanding intertwined with each other so it could be understood more clearly and distinctly with a combination of the two views.
