  • Abstract
    Theprimingeffectofmirrorvisualfeedbackcanbesimplyprovidedbyinexpensivemirrortherapy(MT),whichexhibits beneficialeffectsonsensorimotorrecoveryinstroke.Thepresentstudywasasingle-blindpretest-postteststudythatexamined whethertheprimingeffectofmirrorvisualfeedbackonbilateraltaskpracticewouldrenderbetteroutcomes.Twenty-three patientswithchronicstrokewererandomizedtoreceivehospital-basedtask-orientedMTorbilateralarmtraining(BAT)for4 weeksat90minutes/day,3days/weekandahomepracticefor30-40minutes/day,5days/week.Therewasthepotentialtrend forMTtoimprovetemperaturesenseasmeasuredbytherevisedNottinghamSensoryAssessment(Cohen’sd=1:00;95% confidenceinterval,-0.09to2.09),andMTincreasedtheStrokeImpactScale3.0totalscore(d=0:89;0.003to1.71).MTalso showedatrendforgreaterimprovementsintheMotorActivityLog(amountofuse:d=0:62;-0.24to1.44;qualityof movement:d=0:50;-0.35to1.31).MTinvolvingbilateralmovementpracticewiththeprimingeffectofmirrorvisualfeedback mayrenderbeneficialeffects.TheunilateralapproachorMTaugmentedbyextrafeedbackmightbeappropriatemodifications
