Abstract
This study aims to examine the various dimensions of Tammām Ḥassān’s linguistic theory of contextual evidence that centers on the idea of taḍāfur al-qarāin and its effect on linguistic analysis. Ḥassān is a linguist who ushered in a new direction within Arabic linguistic studies by stressing the significance of the ḳarīnas (contextual clues) in Arabic grammatical structures as an alternative to the classical irāb theory without totally ignoring it. Included also in the study are such topics as the place of the ḳarīnas in the syntactic theory, the significance of ḳarīnas in semantics, the relationship between ḳarīnas and Arabic grammar. Finally, Arabic linguistic studies are structured anew in a way to bringing together the form and meaning. The study also attempts to link the term ḳarīna with el-Jurjānī’s naẓm theory of semantic formation and its relationship to linguistic analysis.
