The physical meaning of the contour wave in diffraction theory

Two possible approaches for the study of diffraction of light by a screen are the methods attributed, respectively, to Young and Fresnel. The connection between those two approaches is discussed in a way to clarify possible confusion or misunderstanding of the physical meaning of the contour wave that is used to make the link between them.
