Abstract
Czech painter Jaroslav ČERMÁK is one of important figure of Romanticism. This artist, who played significant role in Czech nationalistic awakening and in Czech Slavic movement, intensively used symbols related to East and Balkans in his works. This draws attention to the most remarkable ones of these symbols such as harem and abduction of women and it interprets them in the light of the artist’s life, personality and the movements of thought that influenced his works. The artistic, aesthetic, patriotic and political messages hidden in these works are also discussed.
