Abstract
An analytical calculation is presented and used to illustrate the principal features of the motion of rapidly rotating cylinders sliding over smooth surfaces. In particular, the time dependences of the angle rotated through, the distance traveled, and the lateral deflection of the cylinder are calculated. Examples of cylinders are given for which rotation and sliding stop at different times. The theoretical results are also compared to observed motions of curling rocks sliding on "pebbled" ice.
