Abstract
Effective drug treatment of diabetes has changed dramatically since it first became available with the introduction of insulin in 1921. Today the list of drugs available or in development extends over several pages. It includes insulin secretagogues (such as the sulphonylureas and meglitinides), insulin sensitisers, DPP4 inhibitors and the biguanide, metformin – currently the firstline treatment for type 2 diabetes – that are already well established, whilst others are in various stages of development.
