  • Abstract
    Two methods of culture-concrete raceways and fiberglasstanks were evaluated to determine their effect on growth, survivalrates and feed conversion ratio of white shrimp Penaeus indicus, for a155-day culture period. Each treatment was represented by three replications.Shrimps were fed three times a day at a rate of 3 to 8% oftheir total body weights. Seawater and aeration were continuously distributedto the culture facilities. Shrimp growth was mostly similar inboth treatments with an average weight gain of 20.2 ± 0.06 g in concreteraceway tanks followed by the fiberglass tanks (20.1 ± 0.02 g).Production rates of 0.28 ± 0.13 and 0.21 ± 0.09 kg/m3 were obtainedin this study from the concrete raceway and fiberglass tanks, respectively.Survival rate was significantly higher (P 0.05) in concreteraceway tanks, (91.33%) than in fiberglass tanks (68.67%). Statisticalanalysis showed no significant difference between concreteraceway culture and the fiberglass tanks in terms of growth rates. Significantdifferences were observed in terms of survival rate and feedconversion ratio in favor of concrete raceway tanks. Suitable physicochemicalcharacters of culture waters coupled with high growth ratespoint that commercial culture of white shrimp Penaeus indicus in bothculture facilities may be feasible.
