Treatment of chronic osteomyelitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes in a dog

The material of the case was a 10-year-old, male, Anatolian shepherd dog, complaint with swelling, lameness, opened wound, fistulas and tissue loosening on the left forelimb. In clinical examination of the left radius/ulna, opened ulcerative wound and fistulas with soft tissue loosening were observed. The radiological outcomes were diagnosed as the periosteal proliferations and the cystic lesions on the radius, caused by an old gunshot injury. Under the general anesthesia, the bone biopsy was taken from the radius; however a culture was maintained in the radius for microbiological evaluation. Osteomyelitis was diagnosed pathologically and the culture and susceptibility test results revealed heavy growth of Streptococcus pyogenes. The dog was placed on per os clindamycin, 5 mg/kg, twice a day, for 6 weeks. The clinical and radiological exams were done 3 times with 2 weeks intervals. At the end of 6 weeks, any lameness was not shown and the bone structure and ream was observed as the original shape nearly. As a result, per os clindamycin treatment was successful on osteomyelitis, caused by Streptococcus pyogenes in a dog.
