Abstract
Computer simulation is an underutilised tool in the field of stone weathering research. The aim of this paper is to illustrate its potential by using a simple computer simulation of limestone weathering. The weathering processes simulated are: changes taking place at the stone/atmosphere interface; the motion of salts and water through the stone; and changes in weathering state as a result of the previous mechanisms. Through use of the simulation three issues in weathering research are addressed, i.e. evidence is provided for the passivation of limestone surfaces by gypsum; insights into the so-called “memory effect” are presented; and the pitfalls involved in rapid cycle laboratory experiments are illustrated.
