Some evidence on the signalling role of research in academia

Evidence is presented in support of the signalling role of research in higher education. High ability students are more likely to attend schools that have successful researchers. With conditioning on the ability of the student body, a school is more likely to have a larger share of out-of-state and foreign students if it has more successful researchers.
