Candidate ability and platform choice

Contrary to the median voter theorem, candidates in real-world elections do not always adopt moderate platforms. Using a modified Hotelling model, we show that low-ability candidates may attempt to differentiate themselves from higher-ability competitors by choosing less moderate platforms
