Abstract
Contributions of solid mechanics research to the development of composite materials and structures are reviewed.
The main topics include the tensile and compressive strength of ®brous composites; transformation and residual
®elds in composite and laminated microstructures; plasticity and viscoplasticity of composites during processing,
under thermomechanical service loads, and in the presence of evolving fatigue damage; delamination, damage and
fracture; and future research needs. #
