Until we have outcome studies, in neuroanaesthesia, which demonstrate one drugʹs superiority over another, the rationale for choosing any agent must be founded on an understanding of its cerebral pharmacodynamics. We have reviewed the cerebral effects of the intravenous and volatile anaesthetic agents together with the opioids and have, where possible, concentrated on the most contemporary literature involving human subjects
