  • Abstract
PURPOE: To report the aociation of antiretinal antibodie in patient with bilateral cytoid macular edema and retiniti pigmentoa. METHOD: In a propective tudy, 30 conecutive patient with bilateral cytoid macular edema and retiniti pigmentoa were teted for antiretinal antibodie. A control ubject, 30 conecutive patient with retiniti pigmentoa who did not have cytoid macular edema and 50 normal ubject without retiniti pigmentoa or cytoid macular edema were teted for antiretinal antibodie. Laboratory peronnel performing the antiretinal antibody teting were maked regarding the diagnoi of each patient. REULT: Twenty-even (90%) of 30 patient with retiniti pigmentoa with cytoid macular edema had antiretinal protein antibody activity, compared with three (6%) of 50 normal control (P < .001) and only four (13%) of 30 control patient with retiniti pigmentoa (P < .001). CONCLUION: We found a ignificant aociation between cytoid macular edema and the preence of circulating antiretinal antibodie in patient who preented with retiniti pigmentoa and cytoid macular edema. Thi tudy ugget that patient with retiniti pigmentoa with cytoid macular edema may have an autoimmune proce that i contributing to the formation of cytoid macular edema in retiniti pigmentoa, but to date, there i no direct evidence that the cytoid macular edema i caued by the antiretinal antibodie.
