Brimonidine 0.2% given two or three time daily veru timolol maleate 0.5% in primary open-angle glaucoma

PURPOE: To evaluate the efficacy and afety of brimonidine 0.2% two or three time daily veru timolol maleate 0.5% olution twice daily. METHOD: Patient with primary open-angle glaucoma were randomized by Latin quare technique to one of the three treatment equence in thi croover, propective double-maked trial. Each treatment period conited of 6 week of chronic doing followed by a diurnal curve for the intraocular preure meaured at 08:00, 10:00, 16:00, 18:00, 20:00, 22:00, and 24:00 hour. Intraocular preure wa meaured by applanation tonometry. REULT: Thirty patient completed thi trial. The average diurnal intraocular preure in the trial were meaured for timolol maleate (17.7 ± 2.7 mm Hg), brimonidine given three time daily (18.0 ± 2.2 mm Hg), and brimonidine given twice daily (19.2 ± 2.4 mm Hg). There wa a tatitical difference between group (P < .005). When group were compared by pair, three time daily doing with brimonidine and timolol maleate both reduced the preure more than twice daily brimonidine at every time point pat 10:00 hour and for the diurnal curve (P < .05). In contrat, three time daily brimonidine and timolol maleate were tatitically imilar for the diurnal preure, and each time point, except timolol maleate, decreaed the preure more at 16:00 (P = .042). afety wa imilar between group. CONCLUION: Thi tudy demontrated that both timolol maleate twice daily and brimonidine three time daily provide a imilar intraocular preure reduction to each other. Timolol maleate twice daily and brimonidine three time daily provide a greater decreae in preure in the late afternoon and nighttime hour, compared with brimonidine twice daily.
