Abstract
PURPOE: To etimate the prevalence of ateroid hyaloi and to examine correlate of ateroid hyaloi in a population-baed cohort.
METHOD: The population of Beaver Dam, Wiconin, that wa 43 to 86 year of age wa examined from 1988 to 1990 (n = 4926). The population i predominantly white (99.4%) northern European. Ateroid hyaloi wa determined from tereocopic fundu photograph of three tandard field.
REULT: Fundu photograph were gradable in 4747 ubject. Ateroid hyaloi wa preent in 1.2% (95% confidence interval, 0.9,1.5%). In ubject in which it wa preent, ateroid hyaloi wa bilateral in 9%. Prevalence increaed ignificantly (P < .001) with age from 0.2% in ubject 43 to 54 year to 2.9% in ubject 75 to 86 year. After adjuting for age, men were more likely (1.8%) to have ateroid hyaloi than women (0.8%). After adjuting for age and ex, ateroid hyaloi wa ignificantly more likely to be found in ubject with greater body ma (P = .02) and higher alcohol conumption (P = .03). There were nonignificant trend with ytolic blood preure (P = .07), erum choleterol (P = .09), and erum albumin (P = .09). It wa not ignificantly aociated (P > .05) with diatolic blood preure, hypertenion, diabete, cardiovacular dieae hitory, high-denity-lipoprotein choleterol, erum calcium, cigarette moking, phyical activity, intraocular preure, or refractive error. Thee relationhip were confirmed in a multivariable logitic model.
CONCLUION: The current tudy document the infrequency of ateroid hyaloi in the population a graded from three photographic field of the fundu. It doe not upport previou obervation of an aociation of ateroid hyaloi with diabete or refractive error. The relevance of the new aociation reported (body ma, alcohol) remain to be determined.
