  • Abstract
PURPOE: To decribe fundu autofluorecence (AF) pattern and their change over time in patient with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and high rik of viual lo participating in the druen laer tudy (DL). DEIGN: Randomized clinical trial. METHOD: The tudy population conited of 29 patient (35 eye) participating in the DL, which i a propective, randomized, controlled clinical trial of prophylactic laer therapy in patient with AMD and high rik of neovacular complication. The intervention conited of 16 eye having prophylactic laer and 19 receiving no treatment. The main outcome meaure were change in the ditribution of druen and AF. Patient were reviewed for a median follow-up or 24 month (range 12–36 month). REULT: At baeline, four pattern of fundu AF were recognized: focal increaed AF (n = 18), reticular AF (n = 3), combined focal and reticular AF (n = 2), and homogeneou AF (n = 12). At lat follow-up, fundu AF remained unchanged in 15 untreated (78%) and in even treated (43%) eye. In only one untreated eye, focal area of increaed AF returned to background level and were no longer detectable at lat follow-up, compared with ix treated eye. Thi difference wa tatitically ignificant (P = .03). Only large foveal oft druen (druenoid pigment epithelium detachment) conitently correponded with focal change in AF, wherea no obviou correpondence wa found between mall oft druen located elewhere and change in AF. CONCLUION: The lack of obviou correpondence between the ditribution of druen and of AF found in thi tudy appear to indicate that druen and AF repreent independent meaure of aging in the poterior pole.
