  • Abstract
Purpoe To invetigate a new type of elf-ealing par plana clerotomy clinically and by mean of ultraound biomicrocopy and to compare the outcome with conventionally utured clerotomie. Deign Propective, nonrandomized clinical trial. Method Twenty-one patient underwent par plana vitrectomy either with (control group) or without uturing (tudy group) at the Intitute of Ophthalmology, Univerity Medical Centre Nijmegen, The Netherland, between January 1 and March 31, 2002. One day and 6 to 8 week potoperatively, the clerotomy ite were tudied by clinical examination and ultraound biomicrocopy. Reult were graded according to verbal decriptor cale. Reult The tudy included 21 patient cheduled for par plana vitrectomy of one eye. Mean follow-up time wa 6.5 week (range, 6–8). Three patient were lot to follow-up. Of the remaining patient, 12 had elf-ealing wedge-clerotomie and ix were conventionally operated. No intraoperative complication occurred in any participant and no viual lo or potoperative hypotony wa oberved. On the firt day after urgery there wa ignificantly more cleral dehicence in the control group (P = .012). Thi divergence diappeared during the follow-up period. All other difference noticed were not tatitically ignificant. Concluion Our novel technique of uturele wedge-haped clerotomy allow the creation of imple, reliable, and elf-ealing par plana opening. Clinical examination and aement by ultraound biomicrocopy howed reult to be at leat a afe a conventionally utured clerotomie. Thi new method allow table intraoperative ocular preure condition and eem promiing.
