Abstract
Purpoe
To review the more ignificant herbal and nutritional agent of clinical importance to ophthalmologit and decribe the ocular ide effect for each. World Health Organization (WHO) claification and guideline for clinician are provided.
Deign
Retropective obervational cae erie.
Method
A retropective obervational cae erie of report of ocular ide effect or ytemic ide effect from medication ued for the eye from herbal medicine and nutritional upplement. Cae were collected from pontaneou report ubmitted to the WHO, the Food and Drug Adminitration, and the National Regitry of Drug-Induced Ocular ide Effect. A review of the worldʹ literature wa performed to obtain additional cae report and inight into advere ocular reaction. Data were collected on age, gender, duration of therapy, concomitant medication, doage, and dechallenge and rechallenge reult.
Reult
The National Regitry of Drug-Induced Ocular ide Effect received 263 pontaneou report, in addition to 60 cae report from the literature. Canthaxanthine, chamomile, Datura, Echinacea purpurea, Ginkgo biloba, licorice, niacin, and vitamin A are all aociated with clinically ignificant ocular ide effect.
Concluion
Herbal medicine and nutritional upplement can caue ocular ide effect. Clinician need to recognize thee advere event, becaue a large egment of the population ue them, many time without the treating phyicianʹ knowledge.
