Abstract
Purpoe
To compare level of α-tocopherol in human lene with cataract to clear human lene and to determine aociation between level of α-tocopherol in plama, red blood cell, and human lene with cataract.
Deign
Cro-ectional tudy.
Method
Concentration of α-tocopherol were meaured by high-performance liquid chromatography in blood and in human lene with and without cataract. Lene were obtained during cataract urgery and from a regional eye bank. Peripheral α-tocopherol tatu in patient wa aeed a plama α-tocopherol (total and corrected for low-denity lipoprotein) and a red blood cell bound α-tocopherol. Data (mean ± tandard error of the mean) are expreed a μM α-tocopherol/g len protein, μM α-tocopherol/l plama, μM α-tocopherol/g low-denity lipoprotein, and μM α-tocopherol/T red blood cell.
Reult
Concentration of α-tocopherol were meaured in 27 lene of cataract patient, 8 cadaver lene with cataract and in 14 clear cadaver lene. The concentration of α-tocopherol wa ignificantly higher in cataract than in control cadaver lene (0.49 ± 0.04 v 0.35 ± 0.03, P < .05). The difference between α-tocopherol in lene of cataract patient and control cadaver lene wa even higher (0.7 ± 0.1 v 0.35 ± 0.03, P < .01).
No ignificant correlation wa oberved between plama α-tocopherol or red blood cell bound α-tocopherol and len α-tocopherol in patient.
Concluion
erum and red blood cell level of α-tocopherol may not reflect the α-tocopherol tatu of the len itelf and therefore may not be clinically relevant marker for cataract rik. Mechanim leading to increaed level of α-tocopherol in cataract lene need to be explored in future reearch.
