  • Abstract
Purpoe To identify factor that contribute to poterior capule opacification (PCO) after implantation of a 5.5 mm polyacrylic (IOL). Deign A retropective analyi of a cohort of equential image taken from the PCO databae at t. Thoma’ Hopital, London, to include all patient with an Acryof MA30 len and a 1-year retroillumination image. Method Record of age, gender, axial length, and PCO meaurement uing the POCO oftware ytem were available. Image were divided into thoe with greater or le than 10% PCO. The degree of rhexi-IOL contact wa recorded in clock hour. Reult Image of 60 eye were analyzed. Twenty-one eye had more than 10% PCO. No correlation wa found between PCO and age, gender, or axial length. Forty-eight eye (80%) had ome lo of rhexi-IOL contact. Thee eye had increaed PCO (P< .001) compared with eye with complete IOL-rhexi contact. More PCO developed when the rhexi wa partly on and partly off the IOL. Concluion PCO i reduced when the rhexi i in complete contact with the anterior IOL urface. The failure to achieve thi account for the majority of increaed PCO een in patient implanted with thi IOL model. PCO formation i related to urgical technique a well a IOL deign, and comparion cannot be made between IOL without taking thi into conideration. Thee reult upport the trend to the ue of larger optic IOL to prevent PCO and alo upport the “capule compreion” theory of PCO prevention.
