Abstract
Purpoe
To determine the antibiotic uceptibility of preoperative conjunctival bacterial flora.
Deign
In vitro tudy.
Method
Antibiotic uceptibility of conjunctival bacterial train iolated from 164 patient undergoing intraocular urgery wa determined uing the Kirby-Bauer dik-diffuion technique.
Reult
Among the 162 bacteria iolated, 124 (76%) were coagulae-negative taphylococci (CN), with 2% reitant to gatifloxacin and moxifloxacin, and none were reitant to vancomycin or minocycline. Other bacteria iolated were 19 taphylococcu aureu (. aureu), 8 treptococcu Group D, and 11 gram-negative rod. Mot . aureu (>85%) were uceptible to all antibiotic except for the penicillin and macrolide group. No treptococci were reitant to gatifloxacin, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, mezlocillin, imipenem, or vancomycin. None of the gram-negative rod were reitant to the fluoroquinolone. Approximately one half of all bacteria were reitant to erythromycin. One in three patient harbored multi-reitant bacteria (reitant to ≥ five antibiotic).
Concluion
Newer-generation fluoroquinolone provide excellent broad-pectrum coverage againt conjunctival bacterial flora.
