Abstract
Purpoe
To ae the role of ytemic non-teroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NAID) in the treatment of inflammatory cytoid macular edema (iCME).
Deign
Pilot tudy.
Method
We included 66 patient with iCME and treated them with naproxen (2 × 250 mg daily; n = 28) or rofecoxib (1 × 25 mg daily; n = 38). After 4 month of therapy, viual acuity and inflammation activity were meaured. We evaluated the grade of CME, retinal vaculiti, and papillary leakage with fluorecein angiography.
Reult
No clear effect of NAID on iCME, viual acuity, and intraocular inflammation wa oberved. A beneficial effect wa noted in le than 8% of the affected eye. The drop-out rate after 4 month of treatment wa 52%, becaue of advere effect or inefficacy of the treatment. Improvement of viual acuity wa lightly better in patient who were treated with naproxen compared with rofecoxib (P ≤ .05).
Concluion
ytemic NAID have a limited role (if any) in the treatment of iCME.
