Abstract
Purpoe
To invetigate the number of patient viit to ophthalmologit in the United tate that are aociated with ocular toxoplamoi, and to ae ophthalmologit’ knowledge and treatment practice with regard to the dieae.
Deign
Written urvey.
Method
A random ample of 1000 U ophthalmologit wa urveyed by mail in early 2002 by a quetionnaire that wa developed to collect information about phyician demographic, and with regard to toxoplamoi, number of patient een, management practice, and knowledge about pathogenei and rik factor.
Reult
Among 478 repondent (48%), 261 (55%) indicated that they had een one or more patient thought to have active toxoplamic retinochoroiditi in the prior 2 year, and 445 (93%) indicated that they had een one or more patient with inactive retinochoroidal car thought to be inactive toxoplamoi in the prior 2 year. There wa a diverity of opinion regarding topic, including the timing of infection and rik factor for ocular involvement. Many ophthalmologit expreed uncertainty about quetion regarding the dieae.
Concluion
Ocular toxoplamoi i aociated with a ubtantial number of patient viit in the United tate each year. A variable undertanding of the dieae indicate a need for continuing medical education regarding ocular toxoplamoi.
