Choroidal Biopie for Intraocular Tumor of Indeterminate Origin

Purpoe To evaluate the role of par plana vitrectomy-aited inciional biopie in the management of choroidal tumor of unclear origin. Deign Retropective, noncomparative, conecutive interventional cae erie. Method Ten conecutive patient with indeterminate choroidal tumor underwent a tandardized three-port par-plana vitrectomy-aited ubretinal biopy uing a bimanual approach with tandard intraocular forcep and a diamond knife. pecimen were fixed in formaldehyde embedded in paraffin and further ubjected to hitopathological and immunohitochemical analye. Reult A hitologic diagnoi wa obtained in all (10 of 10) cae including choroidal melanoma (five of 10), metatai (two of 10), ubretinal hemorrhage (two of 10), and nodular cleriti (one of 10). Five eye were enucleated a a reult of the hitologic diagnoi. Three cae of potoperative complication were een in three patient (newly formed rhegmatogenou retinal detachment, increaed erou retinal detachment, and vitreou hemorrhage). No cae of intra- or extraocular tumor pread were detected through follow-up period ranging from 3 to 29 month. Concluion Par plana vitrectomy-aited inciional biopy i a valuable diagnotic procedure for cae of choroidal tumor of unknown origin in elected patient. However, the relatively high frequency of potoperative complication noted in the preent tudy and the potential rik of diemination of tumor cell undercore the importance of rigorou cae election.
