  • Abstract
Purpoe To verify the preence of the element ilicon on hydrophilic acrylic intraocular lene (IOL) explanted becaue of calcification. Deign Interventional cae erie with clinicopathological correlation. Method Twenty explanted IOL with urface depoit (MemoryLen), and 20 with depoit motly within their optic ubtance (C60B-OUV and Aqua-ene; 10 each) were ued. After gro, microcopic, and hitochemical analye to confirm the preence of depoit, the lene underwent canning electron microcopy (EM) with energy diperive x-ray pectrocopy (ED) for elemental compoition, on the external urface of MemoryLen IOL, and on the urface and internal ubtance of C60B-OUV and Aqua-ene IOL. The weight percentage of the element ilicon wa obtained at the level of depoit, and at adjacent depoit-free area in all lene. Reult canning electron microcopy (EM) coupled with ED confirmed that the compoition of the depoit wa calcium/phophate in all cae. The element ilicon wa found in all 40 lene, on all area analyzed. The ilicon weight percentage wa higher at the level of the depoit. The preence of aluminum on five MemoryLen IOL, and in mot of the C60B-OUV and Aqua-ene lene might be related to cattering from the aluminum mounting tub ued for urface analye. Concluion ilicone compound have been implicated in the calcification of another hydrophilic acrylic deign (Hydroview). They may alo have a role in the calcification of other hydrophilic acrylic IOL. Further invetigation on the relationhip between the preence of the element ilicon and the ilicone compound found on calcified hydrophilic acrylic lene i neceary.
