Abstract
Purpoe
To etimate the prevalence and ditribution of blindne and low viion in Northern China.
Deign
Population-baed cohort tudy.
Method
The Beijing Eye tudy included 4438 ubject with an age of 40+ year. Mean age wa 56.2 ± 10.6 year (range, 40 to 101 year).
Reult
Forty-three (1.0%) individual had low viion (<20/60 and ≥20/400 bet-corrected viion), and 17 (0.4%) individual were blind (bet-corrected viual acuity in the better-eeing eye <20/400). Low viion/blindne were ignificantly aociated with age (P < .001), myopic refractive error (P < .001), and level of educational background (P = .035). It wa not aociated with gender (P = .76) and rural v urban area (P = .88).
Concluion
Blindne or low viion affect approximately one in 100 Chinee older than 40 year. An etimated 4.1 million Chinee older than 40 year have low viion, and an etimated 1.6 million Chinee older than 40 year are blind.
