Analyi of Bacterial Culture in Infectiou Keratiti, 1997 to 2004

Purpoe To review bacterial culture reult in infectiou keratiti at a tertiary referral center. Deign Retropective cae erie. Method Analyi of Gram tain, bacterial culture, and targeted antibiotic enitivitie of all cae of preumed infectiou keratiti at Duke Univerity Eye Center from 1997 to 2004 (n = 453). Reult Culture were poitive in 307 cae (68%); 21% demontrated polymicrobial growth. Among 388 iolate, 81% were Gram-poitive. Gram tain reult were available in 334 cae, demontrating 18% enitivity and 94% pecificity. Antibiotic enitivitie revealed 24% reitance of teted . aureu iolate to cefazolin, and <5% reitance of teted gram-negative iolate to variou antibiotic, with no tatitically ignificant increae from 1997 to 2004. Concluion In thi tudy, the microbial profile ha remained table from 1997 to 2004. Gram tain tudie were of poor enitivity, while culture yield were ignificantly higher and demontrated a relatively high polymicrobial infection rate. Increaing antibiotic reitance wa not clearly demontrated.
