Abstract
Purpoe
To decribe the prevalence of trabimu and factor aociated with it diagnoi in a repreentative ample of older Autralian children.
Deign
Cro-ectional, population-baed tudy.
Method
A repreentative tratified random cluter ample of 2353 children (aged 12 year) attending 21 econdary chool in ydney, Autralia wa examined in 2004 to 2005 (repone 75.3%). Cover teting wa performed at near (30 cm) and ditance (6 m); cycloplegic autorefraction, viual acuity, and tereoacuity were aeed. Previou trabimu diagnoi wa obtained from parental quetionnaire.
Reult
trabimu wa evident in 64 children (2.7%); 21 (33%) had eotropia, 27 (42%) had exotropia, and 16 (25%) had microtrabimu. There were no gender (P = .2) or ethnicity (P = .6) aociation. Previou diagnoi by an eye practitioner wa noted in 27 (42%). Thi wa related to hyperopia (P = .04), eotropia (P = .001), and amblyopia (P = .001).
Concluion
trabimu wa relatively infrequent in thi Autralian childhood ample. It diagnoi wa trongly related to preence of eotropia, hyperopia, and amblyopia.
