Abstract
Purpoe
To determine rate of glaucoma medication utilization among glaucoma upect in the Medicare Current Beneficiary urvey (MCB) and identify recent utilization pattern for variou hypotenive drug clae.
Deign
Cohort tudy.
Method
By uing MCB data between 1992 and 2002 merged with Medicare claim data, utilization rate for glaucoma medication clae were calculated for urvey participant ≥65 year with upected glaucoma. Utilization trend over the 11-year period were identified.
Reult
Each year, more than 85% of glaucoma upect ued no hypotenive medication. Between 1992 and 2002, utilization rate decreaed ubtantially for β-blocker and miotic and increaed for α-agonit, combination β-blocker–carbonic-anhydrae inhibitor, and protaglandin analogue.
Concluion
Thi tudy identifie recent change in pattern of glaucoma upect’ ue of hypotenive medication by uing patient-reported information, thu avoiding reliance on third-party databae. uch trend over time are important to recognize, becaue they reflect variation in patient care and have economic and clinical implication.
