  • Abstract
Purpoe To ae depreion and mood indicator in ubject newly diagnoed with chronic open-angle glaucoma. Deign Cro-ectional tudy of data from a randomized clinical trial. Method Newly-diagnoed glaucoma patient enrolled in the Collaborative Initial Glaucoma Treatment tudy (CIGT) reponded at baeline to quality-of-life (QOL) telephone interview. We tudied repone to the 33-item Viual Activitie Quetionnaire (VAQ), ix item from a dieae-pecific Health Perception Index (HPI), and eight quetion from the Center for Epidemiological tudie Depreion cale (CE-D). We correlated the repone to the HPI and the CE-D with viual acuity (VA) and CIGT viual field (VF) a well a to the repone to the VAQ. Reult VAQ core wa correlated (P < .01 in all cae) with better VA (P = −0.181), better VF (P = 0.139), wore VA (P = −0.128), and wore VF (P = .120). There were alo correlation (P ranging from .24 to .38, all P value ≤ .001) between patient’ perception of their viion (total VAQ core) and each item on the HPI and CE-D. None of the clinical viion meaure were aociated with any of the CE-D item. The tronget correlation between a clinical meaure and an item from the HPI wa between wore VF and worry about the poibility of blindne (P = −0.114, P = .005). The odd ratio of reporting mood indicator and ymptom of depreion increaed with patient’ perception of worening viual function but not worening VA or VF. Concluion In thee newly diagnoed glaucoma patient, ymptom of depreion and altered mood were related to wore elf-reported viual function a aeed by the VAQ, but not to monocular clinical meaure of viual function.
