Patient’ Decription of Viual enation During Par Plana Vitrectomy under Retrobulbar Anetheia Original Reearch Article

Purpoe To invetigate the viual enation experienced by patient during vitrectomy under retrobulbar anetheia. Deign Cro-ectional tudy. Method Fifty-ix men and 45 women with a mean age of 62.2 ± 11.9 year (range, 30 to 89 year) were tudied. Twenty-two eye had an idiopathic epiretinal membrane, 10 had an idiopathic macular hole, 29 had macular edema (16 reulting from diabetic retinopathy and 13 reulting from retinal vein occluion), 14 had proliferative diabetic retinopathy, 13 had rhegmatogenou retinal detachment, four had proliferative vitreoretinopathy, and nine had other retinal dieae. The patient were quetioned about their viual enation during and within three hour after vitrectomy, which wa performed under retrobulbar anetheia uing 2% lidocaine hydrochloride. Viual enation perceived by the patient during urgery were reviewed. Reult Ninety-one of the 101 patient experienced ome type of viual enation during the vitrectomy. Ninety-one (90.1%) patient reported eeing light, 73 (72.3%) patient reported eeing one or more color, and 57 (56.4%) patient reported eeing movement or moving object. Of thee latter 57 patient, 54 aw intrument and nine (8.9%) aw the urgeon’ finger or hand. In the 94 cae that had triamcinolone-aited vitrectomy, 35 (37.2%) reported eeing many diffue whirling black pot. ix patient (5.9%) found the viual experience frightening. Concluion Viual enation are experienced by approximately 90% of the patient depite full pain control, and urgeon hould warn patient of thee poibilitie becaue they can be frightening. Thi hould minimize patient’ anxiety and tre during the urgery.
