  • Abstract
    Purpoe To report the epidemiological data, clinical profile, and urgical outcome of canalicular laceration in an Indian population. Deign Retropective interventional cae erie. Method All patient who underwent canalicular laceration repair from July 1, 2002 to June 30, 2005 at a tertiary eye care center were retropectively reviewed. Demographic, caue of eyelid injury, aociated ocular injury, urgical management with Mini-Monoka monocanalicular tent, and it outcome were analyzed. Reult ixty-ix patient underwent eyelid laceration repair, of which 24 (36%) had involvement of the canalicular ytem. The mean age at preentation wa 16 year (range, 10 month to 52 year); 20 (83.3%) patient were male. Mode of injury included the bloue-hook fatener in five (20.8%) breat-feeding infant, bicycle handle injury in four (16.7%) children, and metal rod injury in five (20.8%) adult. Lower canaliculu wa involved in 13 (54.1%), upper in eight (33.3%), and both in three (12.5%) patient. imultaneou globe injury wa noted in ix (25%) patient, five (83.3%) of which had upper canalicular involvement. Twenty-even canalicular laceration (24 patient) underwent tenting with the Mini-Monoka monocanalicular tent. Three (11.1%) tent extruded within one month. At the final follow-up (mean, 18.5 month), canalicular block wa noted in two (10%) out of 20 patient; none had epiphora. Concluion Canalicular involvement occur in 36% of eyelid injurie. Injury by the “bloue-hook fatener” i unique to infant in the Indian context. imultaneou globe injury i preent in 25% of cae, epecially when the upper canaliculu i involved. Mini-Monoka tent extruion occur within one month. With an 11.1% extruion rate, Mini-Monoka tent achieved good anatomical (90%) and functional (100%) ucce in the management of canalicular injury.
