  • Abstract
Purpoe To review ytematically the evidence currently available on alcohol conumption and the rik of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Deign ytematic review and meta-analyi of obervational tudie. Method even databae were earched ytematically with no limit on the year or language of publication for propective cohort tudie. Reference identified from pertinent review and article alo were retrieved. Two reviewer independently earched the above databae and elected the tudie uing prepecified tandardized criteria. Thee criteria included appropriate adjutment for age and moking in the analyi. Of the 441 tudie identified initially, five cohort tudie met the election criteria. Data extraction and tudy quality evaluation were performed independently by two reviewer and reult were pooled quantitatively uing meta-analytic method. Reult The five cohort tudie included 136,946 people, among whom AMD developed in 1923 (1,513 early and 410 late). Pooled reult howed that heavy alcohol conumption wa aociated with an increaed rik of early AMD (pooled odd ratio, 1.47; 95% confidence interval, 1.10 to 1.95), wherea the aociation between heavy alcohol conumption and rik of late AMD wa inconcluive. There were inufficient data to evaluate a doe-repone aociation between alcohol conumption and AMD or the aociation between moderate alcohol conumption and AMD. Concluion Heavy alcohol conumption (more than three tandard drink per day) i aociated with an increaed rik of early AMD. Although thi aociation eem to be independent of moking, reidual confounding effect from moking cannot be excluded completely.
