Abstract
Purpoe
To examine the prevalence and rik factor of retinal arteriolar emboli, a rik predictor of troke, in an Aian population.
Deign
Population-baed cro-ectional tudy.
Method
Retinal emboli were acertained from retinal photograph obtained from both eye of 3,265 Aian Malay, aged 40 to 80 year, according to a tandardized protocol. Rik factor were aeed from detailed tandardized interview, clinical examination, and laboratory invetigation.
Reult
The overall prevalence of retinal emboli wa 0.6% (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.58 to 0.62). A finding of retinal emboli wa trongly aociated with increaing age (P = .005, for trend), but age-tratified prevalence rate were till lower than thoe reported from previou population-baed tudie of White peron. After adjuting for age and gender, the preence of retinal emboli wa aociated with cigarette moking (odd ratio [OR], 5.96; 95% CI, 1.75 to 20.32), elevated total choleterol (OR, 5.21; 95% CI, 1.93 to 12.82), low-denity lipoprotein choleterol (OR, 2.98; 95% CI, 1.20 to 7.39), and elf-reported hitory of angina (OR, 5.67; 95% CI, 1.62 to 19.91). Thee aociation remained ignificant in multivariate analyi with additional adjutment for other rik factor.
Concluion
Retinal emboli are le common in Aian than in imilarly aged White peron, but are aociated with imilar cardiovacular rik factor.
